Transport tips: Due to having a few days off school, I decided to revisit a city I had previously visited in July 2018. The great thing about the Dominican Republic is that from Santo Domingo, most places are near, within 4 to 5 hours maximum. The best way to travel is with a company called “Caribe Tours”. There is also another one called “Metro”. Both provide a good service, AC buses with toilets and very cheap. Don’t expect any luxury but, they are really comfy all the same. Prices from less than $10, from Santo Domingo most places. The only negative thing is that you can only purchase your tickets on the day of travel, so best to be there an hour before.
Puerto Plata: another tip I can give you is that if you are planning on staying a few days, you could rent a scooter or “pasola” as they are called here in DR. Expect to pay $10USD a day, which is very reasonable.
Places to visit: Cabrete & Sosúa (north-east),, here you can find many different beaches along the way. Sosúa has a lovely beach and also in Cabrete, it is known for surfing and kite surfing due to the strong winds they have in the evenings. Sosúa and Cabrete are also quite popular for foreigners. Here you can find all types of accommodations, prices for every budget. From Puerto Plata, Sosúa is about a 20-minute drive and Cabrete about 25/ 30 mins. Check Google Maps for places to eat and drink. The beaches are full of bars and restaurants, so best spend the day there.
However, if you fancy on venturing a little further. This time you will have to go along the north western coast and visit a place called Fricolandia (75 mins by car). Here you can have lunch or literally spend the day. Check them out on Instagram. From what I gathered; you are charged an entrance fee of (700 pesos/ $12USD). You can either bring your own food or eat at their restaurant. They have a lot to choose from. You have access to go swimming, rent a jet ski, there is also a beach nearby for a beach walk…
If you continue west, you can also visit Cayo Arena, which is a sand dune, about 4km from the coast, in the middle of the ocean. A raised coral reef, a great place for snorkelling and taking photos. If you have a drone, the shots you can take can be out of this world. So first, you have to go to a beach called “La Ensenada”. Here you can pay less than $50USD. The tour includes a boat ride to the sand dune, some drink, usually rum & coke, and Mamajuana (it is considered the Viagra of the Dominican Republic lol), a few hours on the sand dune, then back to the beach and it also includes a buffet lunch, so best to get there early. Check out this link for a few pictures of the sand dune. Click here. On this beach you have an array of hotels, hostals and very cheap accommodation to very expensive eco lodges. Check out Booking.com for more details. Type in Booking: Punta Rucia.
If you plan to stay in Puerto Plata itself, which I do recommend you do, try Airbnb or some local hotels, one I can recommend is “Casa Azul”, you have an apartment with a kitchen for $26USD a night pero couple, no breaky but, lots of places to buy food, supermarkets and restaurants along the beach front. A place to visit here is near the city is “Los 27 Charcos”, they are 27 waterfalls, and about 10 of them and over 5 metres in depth, some higher, and you have to jump into them, good fun. You will need to bring some water shoes to really enjoy the experience and a GoPro for photos and videos. Check out my video to see if this is for you. Lots of adrenaline. Personally, I loved it!!
