Introduction: The city is located in the central mountain range about 530m above sea level. If I remember correctly, there are 4 rivers surrounding the city, which are the longest in the Caribbean, one being about 300km long. It can get hot, however, the evenings and nights are quite fresh. It is lush with vegetation, clean air, a lot quieter than Santo Domingo, cheap to eat out and move about. You should negotiate any tours you want to do there rather than buy online.
Places to visit: As a foreign visiting the Dominican Republic, I feel that most foreigners usually visit the usual spots, such as Punta Cana, Barahona, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, basically the coastal cities & islands. However, Jarabacoa is in the countryside or the centre of the country. Only 2 and a half hours drive from Santo Domingo.
How to get there: From Santo Domingo you have a few different options. We went by car, so you can go by bus to Jarabacoa with Caribe Tours, or another company, but for less than $10USD with Caribe Tours, it is well worth it.
Where to stay: booking.com (get €15 off using my code) we stayed in a nice hotel just outside of the city, about 2km. It is called el Hotel Gran Jimenoa however, you have many different options available, just check out booking or another page you are familiar with and choose one.
What to do there: Here you can do so many things, such as rafting, go hiking to the highest peak in the Caribbean which is called Pico Duarte. (shorest route is 3 days). There is a massive waterfall called Salto de Jimenoa, which is quite impressive, although only 35m high (not for jumping off by the way lol) you can also go parapente off a mountain overlooking the city and it is gorgeous from above.
How to get about: Since, it is a small city and most of the hotels offer tours which include hotel pick-up and drop-off. You can also rent a motor taxi, which is a motorbike and it is very cheap! But if in a group order a taxi and you can get about very quickly.
