Santa Bárbara de Samaná

Introduction: Samaná is a province in the Dominican Republic, the capital is Santa Bárbara de Samaná, but it is known as Samaná. It is located in the north-eastern part of the island. In 1493, Columbus and his gang rode into town!! Arrived on January 12 and were greeted with spears and arrows by the Taíno warriors, this was Columbus’s first encounter with violence in the Americas.

How to get there: From Santo Domingo you have a few different options. We went by car, so you can go by bus to Barahona with Caribe Tours, or another company, rent a car, which I highly recommend as getting to Bahia de las Aguilas from Barahona can be a tad tricky considering it is in the middle of nowhere. The best way to visit the island is by car, so if you have a budget where you can rent a car, 100% go for it. The freedom it gives you is well worth it.

In a nutshell: the city is a place to arrive, do whale watching if in season time, but most people usually arrive here then head to the beaches, the other places as mentioned submenu above. It is like a central hotspot to go to the beaches, do activities. However, to spend a day or two, walk along the bridge overlooking the city is quite beautiful. You also have an abundance of places to stay and choose from with a budget for everybody!

Check out my IG stories, which cover many things in Samaná in general covering most places on the province.

There are many different tours you can do here. One is to the island Cayo Levantado Los Haitises National Park and Cayo Levantado can be done in the one day.
